The old belief was that as the weather warmed, the powers of the winter witch were diminished. By burning in effigy a witch figure, it was believed that the cold weather could be eradicated much more quickly. They build a figure of the witch by tying two large sticks together, dressing that with old clothing and stuffing the clothes with straw. A stuffed head, and maybe a hat will be placed on top. As the witch burns, it is hoped, so does the last of winter\u2019s chill.
