One of these Czech traditional beliefs is that young, live pussy willow twigs instill youth and health to anyone who is whipped with them. Pussy willow twigs are braided together and decorated with ribbons to form a poml\u00e1zka (from the word pomladit meaning to make younger). The young men will whip the young women on the legs to chase away illness and bad sprits so they will be healthy and happy for the year to come.
