Mark (Vasko) Bigaouette, Founder of the CzechoSlovak Genealogical Society Intl, I have been leading Heritage - cultural immersion trips to Europe since 1992 (www.czechheritage.com) including the gala 25th anniversary tour for the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in 1999. Author and lecturer, I have attended many different Festivals, Conferences and Symposiums, and organized a few too. I have traveled to Europe well over 100 times, and have looked up my family tree back to about 1480 in East Bohemia.
After leading these types of tours for 20 years, I could write a book. I have seen just about every kind of experience. I have met so many wonderful people from all over the world doing this, a great many of which I now call good friends. Many times the local Czechs think we have known each other all our lives, but in fact we just met a few days before. (the local Czechs & Slovaks are much more reserved) They always tell me – we could never be like that to strangers. Is this a result of 40 years of communism? You need to work on your family history before you think about going overseas. You can’t just say – I think they came from around Prague. That’s like saying I live near Chicago! If you can find out the name of your ancestral village, you should be fine. For more help with that quest I highly suggest you join the: CGSI = CzechoSlovak Genealogical Society International. Not only can they help you find your family villages, but you will learn much more about your heritage as well. Find them on Facebook and on the web at: www.cgsi.org
